Origin of Zumba

Nicki Carless - Zumba

Where did Zumba come from?

Zumba LogoThe Origin of Zumba is a grand story of rags to riches! Alberto Perez’s story began in the slums of Cali, Columbia but his passion for dance and an act of pure chance have propelled him to fame and fortune as am internationally known fitness star.

Perez, nicknamed Beto, created Zumba by accident while working as an aerobics instructor, arriving to teach a class one day he discovered that he had forgotten his traditional dance music.

Rather than cancel the class, he improvised using the salsa music that was in his gym bag. Beto integrated traditional dance steps along with the aerobic movements and initially called this new exercise program “Rumbacise”.

In 1999, Perez brought his new aerobic dance program to Miami, where he teamed with Perlman and Aghion and rebranded the class as “Zumba”. Perez now teaches up to 2000 people a week in heavily attended classes.
